Realistic goals
A honeypot won’t replace backups, patching, or MFA. It will give a shop owner or IT-of-one early signal that automated abuse is touching the LAN.
Placement
- Prefer a dedicated VLAN or DMZ-like segment if available
- Avoid exposing the honeypot directly on the public internet by default
- Document who reviews logs weekly — even a five-minute glance
