Home network security basics

Most homes run a tiny enterprise without the staff. A few habits close the loudest holes.

Start with the boring wins

  • Unique router admin password; disable remote admin if you don’t need it
  • Keep firmware updated on router, NAS, and cameras
  • Prefer WPA3/WPA2; isolate guest Wi‑Fi for visitors and sketchy gadgets

Segmentation is kindness

Put IoT on a separate VLAN or guest network when your gear allows it. Your laptop shouldn’t share a blast radius with a bargain camera.

Where HoneyBox fits

Prevention reduces risk. HoneyBox adds visibility: proof of probes on services you don’t actually offer. That pride of knowing beats hoping the firewall “probably” dropped everything.
